The Great Pyramids of Giza.
I just thought Alexandria was polluted… that was before Harry and I hired a driver for the day to take us to Cairo. It’s just as dirty with 18 million people occupying this ancient city.
Cairo and the Pyramids have been on my wish list of things to see for many, many years. And we finally made it.
Cairo is the capital of Egypt and one of the largest communities of the world. As we travel the city streets… we are astonished at the sights. Our first stop…. The Pyramids of Giza.
We diverted from our driver long enough to hire a horse drawn carriage to ride us to and around the pyramids. The carriage shielded us from the sun, which made for a comfortable ride out of the heat. The only semi-scary part was when the ride took us through the bust streets of Cairo… I had no clue horse drawn carriages were allowed on the street with rapidly moving traffic.
We made it safely through the streets…. To pop out in front of the 1st pyramid. And from our first view… we are in awe.
They are huge. Enormous mausoleums erected as tombs for the Pharaoh’s. The ancient Egyptian believed in the afterlife. These pyramids served as a resting place for the pharaoh before making the journey into the eternal life. With the mummified pharaohs were storage places for all their treasures. Also a solar barques, which is a boat for transport into the afterlife, were placed in the tombs.
Through the centuries grave robbers have robbed and pillaged the pyramids. The largest pyramid is the Cheops with an estimated 2.5 million limestone blocks completing the structure.
And no trip would be complete without a camel ride around the pyramids... with the bedouins.
And this is our lucky guy...
He and Harry made quite a pair!
And this is the famous Facebook picture... who would have thought a camel could smile?
Cheese everybody!
We need a picture for our Christmas cards.... this one?
Or maybe this one?
Harry ventured down to touch the gigantic stuctures.... me.. that whole mummie curse thing has me staying viewing from the sidelines.
You do not realize their massive size until its relative to something.... like Harry.
I was amazed at the security of the pyramids.... I felt completely safe the entire time.
