Falasarna, Crete

Greetings,

Yesterday, Harry and I traveled to the far side of the island.

Falasarna and the beaches along the far west end of Crete are peaceful and beautiful, there are just a few simple tavernas and hardly any thing to do but walk, walk and absorb the wild beauty of the place. The beaches are wide, sandy and seem endless. In the hills behind the beaches you find the ruins of the ancient city and harbor of Falasarna.

The ancient city of Falasarna is being excavated. The excavations have exposed some of the walls and buildings of the city. The geographical shift (rise) of Crete has put the ancient harbor on dry land. Falasarna was a commercial naval power during the Hellenistic period and also the harbor of Polirinia. An interesting throne, carved out of rock, is on the dirt track as you enter the ancient city.

It was quite an interesting adventure.... Harry driving over treacherous terrain and wanting to turn around... while I preferred to press on to find more ruins. I lost. We turned around.

And went to the nearest Taverna... Harry won again.

Next time I will drive.

After we had a bite to eat we headed out to the beach for a few rays...

He is so happy when he has a full belly.

.. then the wind picked up. I have never been in a wind storm and not really sure if this classifies as a wind storm... but we were sand blasted.

Here's Harry being pelted with tiny sand missiles. Notice the picture how the ground looks blurry... it is not my lack of photography skills.... it's the blowing sand.

I literally and physically know what that term means now. Sand in every crevasse of everything. The crooks of your arms, in your hair, eyes, ears, nose if you were breathing in at the time... everywhere.

Needless to say... we stayed about an hour then decided to pack it in.

On the drive home we stopped at the port... and I found what ship I want to take my cruise on....

Seriously... it is so 007 Bond looking. I was trying to take a closer look, really I wanted to a tour on and in the boat, but Harry was my killjoy again. Something about protected diplomats and something about it being against the law to even take their photos. Like I said killjoy.

Blessings to those enjoying a nice ride,

Kristie

Much needed vacation

Greetings from a tired/wore out/in need of a vacation state,

Summer has been a blast with all our visitors. From Jerry & Trish to Mount Paran to my parents to the entire Naval Region Chaplains Senior Leadership to Danelle & Logan and all the small things in between we had an amazing time of fellowship with all.

With that being said... I need a vacation!

ANd I found a vacation that looks appealing .....

A 12-day cruise leaving Rome and ending up in Dubai. Most of my vacations have been with Jill and Larry... my flight attendant buddies and not my husband. Before Souda Bay... Harry was flying full time and in Seminary full time (at the same time) so he had a very busy schedule. Any vacations we took were scheduled around school breaks and even then only if he were off work.

Not sure if Harry is going or not... he seems to think the Chapel will fall apart if he takes a day off. He is still working full time and in the Navy War College full time... so we will see. So if anyone wants to go with me.... let me know.

Blessings to those knowing when to slow down,
Kristie

OFF!

Greetings,

From a severely irritated individual....

not from something Harry has done, but literally irritated from mosquitoes. This black and white striped mosquito that resides here in Greece and frequents my skin. We have Tiger Mosquitoes here in Greece.

I am one of those people... who is the ONE in the group that gets bit by whatever, whenever, every time. If a group of 10 is sitting out on the deck.... I am the ONE who gets zapped by the stinging critters. Regardless of the geographical location... I am the ONE who involuntarily donates my blood.

In Florida... the mosquitoes eat me. The entire family is congregated around yet I AM the only target.

In Thailand while riding elephants through the jungle.... they encircle, swarm, and then come in for the kill on MY skin.... not Harry's, not even the elephant.

Here in Greece.... the circumstances have not changed, just a different country. Those flying assassins bypass Harry, Danelle, our neighbors... everyone. To feast on what little blood I have left. I guess it is the season for these aviating varmints cause they are out in full flight.

Daily I am stung, nightly I am feasted upon. I have about 40+ red irritated bites covering my body. It is getting so bad that at night... I keep myself awake clawing at my wounds. Not to mention I am on constant alert for the familiar bzzzing sound near my face that sends me into panic mode. I swat, bury my face in covers, and swing my arms flailing around the covers in hopes of warding off the blood thirsty critters. All the while Harry is sleeping peacefully by my side.

I saw this picture on the internet... and this is exactly what would happen if I were in the hospital. All the other patients would be safe....

Benadryl has become my new best friends... the pill at night to help me sleep and not claw off all my skin and the Itch relief Stick during the day to stop and repair the claw marks from the previous night.

I thought surely.... any packaging with the picture of a mosquito is exactly what I need.

Except it does not really work. I still itch. And itch.

So I decided... maybe I need something different. Something that is preventative and helps stop the massive invasion launched against me. Something to stop the infiltration of mosquitoes....

PLAN A: So I bought the plug-in mosquito repellent... well, let's just say I am allergic to the odor it time releases. And not just, "ah it makes my nose run", but all out itchy eyes, runny nose, eyes watering, face itches uncontrollably. I found myself clawing/rubbing my face/entire body until I showered.

Okay so on to

PLAN B: OFF! Spray mosquito repellent. Which by the way... kind of works. So I carry it everywhere I go. And reapply about 20 times a day. I take it in my handbag... to spray myself down. I hose myself repeatedly here at the house. Harry thinks I am crazy... while we are calmly watching T.V. I will grab my can of OFF!, stand up, shake the can, position it above my head while continuously spraying the entire length of my body. Harry thinks I am nuts.

The problem with PLAN B is that it only contain 15% DEET .... and I think I need more.

According to the EPA:

"DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many insect repellent products. It is used to repel biting pests such as mosquitoes and ticks, including ticks that may carry Lyme disease.

DEET is designed for direct application to human skin to repel insects, rather than kill them. After it was developed by the U.S. Army in 1946, DEET was registered for use by the general public in 1957."

Problem #2 with PLAN B is that it "repels insects, rather than kill them" ... and I want them dead!

And I think maybe.... just maybe the American products I am buying from the NEX are not going to KILL these Greek mosquitoes. I mean they are Tiger mosquitoes... so I might need something local.

So I tried PLAN C: Vape Spiral coils to light and once ignited will zap the mosquitoes.

Problem: again.. does not KILL them, just repels them. Problem #2: It's an Italian product.... so I am going back to the theory of using something local.

They say if you have allergies.... you should eat the local honey... something about local bees producing honey from the local vegetation.. and it helps with seasonal allergies to local plants. Makes sense! So I need a local remedy.

So I am in search of finding the perfect mosquito killer. If you have any suggestions.... I am game. So far I have found....

Insect Repelling Ladies Gardening Hat
This wide-brimmed gardening hat helps provide protection from insects because the cloth is treated with an insect repellent—which lasts for up to 70 washes. It also has a sun-protection rating of UPF 50+, making it an ideal accessory for any sunny day in the garden. $29.99; CleanAirGardening.com

Problem with hat.... what about bedtime? And I have never gardened in my life!

And another option is an attachment to my clothing... the OFF! Clip-On. Not sure if it comes in coordinating colors?

So as my search continues... I hope I have enough skin to last. Or become contaminated with too much DEET before I find something to rid off these pesky unwanted guests that have infiltrated every where I go. My friends are glad to have me around because then the mosquitoes do not bite them... the bite me. I am like one of those lighted mosquito zappers.... I should make tat annoying sound every time one bites me. I must have good blood? One of the Doc's said I should take iron pills. SO I can have stronger blood? More nutritious for the mosquitoes? Whatever? I will try anything at this point.

Blessings to those fighting the good fight,

Kristie

Athens

Greetings,

We have landed in Athens. Danelle, Logan, and I are touring around the city on their final Greece escapades.

First stop ... the newly opened Acropolis Museum

"Welcome to the new Acropolis Museum. 188 years since the declaration of the Greek Independence, 33 years since Constantinos Karamanlis took the far-sighted decision to build it in this particular site, and 27 years since the campaign of Melina Merkouri, a duty is fulfilled and a dream is realized:

A whole nation’s duty to its own cultural heritage; the new Acropolis Museum. The paramount monument of Ancient Classical Times now has its own Museum – at last. In difficult times people need symbols to hold tight and stand straight. The Grand Opening of the new Acropolis Museum may be such a symbolic event. Where the Aesthetics of Logic, the Ethics of Freedom and the Rationality of Beauty, are all fused together and carved in stone for eternity. Acropolis hasn’t stayed intact over the centuries. Yet it is still radiating its Beauty and its Truth."

I would love to show you some pictures.... but again with the camera taking Nazi's. At one point we did not see a single uniformed person anywhere.. and the second we snapped off a really cute shot of Logan... wham out of no where comes the yelling lady.

And here we are before deciding to venture up to the Acropolis. We waited until the afternoon... in hopes of a cooler hike up the steep marble slopes.

Danelle, Logan, and The Monkey on his back made it safely up the cliffs with only a minor slip. I think Danelle will have a nice bruise tomorrow morning.

After the Acropolis we headed for the Olympic Stadium, Parliament, and the changing of the guards. Logan's favorite and my worst nightmare were the birds in front of Parliament. He loved to chase after them... scattering them in all directions, which caused me to duck and cover. I hate birds!

And the cab ride back to our little hotel by the sea.

Tomorrow a jam packed day of traveling!

Blessings,
Kristie

Glass bottom boat

Greetings,

Thought I wound share a few pictures from our Glass bottom boat adventure.

The day started with a trip to the Harbor and a boat ride with Captain Nick. The cruise took us to the islands of Thodorou and Lazaretta.

Please notice Danelle is smiling and seemingly having a good time.... its only for the pictures! She is extremely seasick and ready to blow at any time.

Thodorou, also known as Goat Island is home to the native wild Kri Kri goat. After perusing the hillside for Kri Kri goats and cruising over to the next island.... we stopped to see a decaying World War II German airplane. The wreckage of a Junkers JU 52 shot down during WWII was visible from the glass bottom boat.

Once docked at Lazaretta the Barker's minus Matt, Harry, and Danelle snorkeled off the boat in search of some Cretan marine life.... FYI there really is not any! Good thing Crete has the Aquarium for viewing marine life in their natural habitats.

Logan and I took the dingy to the beach to start working on our tan. Eventually our snorkelers made it there too... so we enjoyed ourselves with a little fun in the sun time.

Logan and Gavin found the rocks... and a little cavern thingy...

Here's Gavin with his snorkel gear....

And Harry with Tristan swimming back to the boat for a bathroom break? Aren't we in the ocean?...

Blessings to those who utilize the vastness of the ocean,

Kristie

CretAquarium

Greetings,

This weekend we took a little road trip to see the CretAquarium.

CretAquarium offers its visitors the unique chance to plunge into the great marine world of the Mediterranean. From the big hunter sharks to the tiny seahorses, the sensational jellyfish, the diversity of marine life is set off against underwater Cretan seascapes; such as the rock formations at Matala ( South Crete) and the sea bed at Vai ( North East Crete).

Sorry... pictures are a little fuzzy... there was a flash Nazi on patrol.

Here's Logan before he realized he could RUN better if he were not strapped into his stroller.

Harry's favorite...

And my favorite.....

Not as cool as the Georgia aquarium, with it's largest view window in America, but it was a nice selection of marine life.

Blessings,

Kristie

New Praise and Worship Band

Greetings,

Here are a few pictures from our impromptu / stay after Chapel and jam session.

As the adults were singing, fellowshipping, and simple having a good time.... the kids decided to join in.

And Emelia on the drums...

There were several other kids singing, but my shots did not turn out. If any of the parents of the Barker's or the Mabie's have the pictures please send them to Harry. He wants to pass them along so Region sees we actually have kids at Souda Bay.

The kids were so cute... they practiced and rehearsed for a little recital on Sunday. Its funny how kids practice one way and then once they are in front of the entire Congregation.... well they act scarred to death!

Blessings to the cutest Chapel kids,

Kristie

Naptime

Greetings,

With all the excitement even Peabody needs a rest.

So during naptime Misses P decided to curl up beside Logan. I think it was the closest she has been to Logan for the longest amount of time. I guess even dogs think they are the cutest when they nap....

Blessings,

Kristie
