fungi multicellular filaments = hyphae
That's what we are experiencing this week at the Hansen household… an epidemic of mold.
Well, maybe not that bad, but it is gross. In humid climates such as Crete, if we do not aerate our house mold will grow. This is kind of a Catch-22... We are freezing so we tighten down the hatches and hunker in for winter….yet we are supposed to leave a window open or cracked to ventilate the space, but if we do then the cold air comes rushing in and we freeze.
“Although molds grow on dead organic matter everywhere in nature, their presence is only visible to the unaided eye when mold colonies grow. A mold colony does not comprise discrete organisms, but an interconnected network of hyphae called a mycelium.”
Because our mold is visible to the human eye…. I think we are breeding a colony of mold. And not all mold is black and red.... we have the white and yellow kind too. Kind of like a floral colony of mold. A mold arrangment.
This kind of mold grows underneath the paint. When the "colony" gets too big....it flakes the paint off. This is happening several places around our doors and windows.
“Molds are ubiquitous in nature, and mold spores are a common component of household and workplace dust. However, when mold spores are present in large quantities, they can present a health hazard to humans, potentially causing allergic reactions and respiratory problems.”
This is the reason I called the housing department to report our colonization of mold. Well that and a small list of other items…. About 6. I have never complained to the housing department… in the year we have been here… not once I have even whispered a complaint. Yesterday, I go in with my small, yet growing list.
1. Bathroom light bulb needed changing.
~Yes I know how to change a bulb….but not this bulb. It has melted to the plastic fixture and will need someone to rip it out… I am not sure how to do it without shattering the bulb.
2. Chimney flue will not close.
~And birds have been flying into the house…sending the animals literally in a tail spin.
3. Electrical socket does not work.
~Landlords solution: use another socket.
4. Tub will not drain.
~I have poured “stuff” down the drain, but to no avail. Landlord says, “It’s probably hair.” Well duh, and now we know what it is can we get rid of it!
5. Bedroom heater not working.
~I NEED MY HEAT! Landlord’s response, “Probably needs batteries.” Well why did I not think of that? Surely that was the 1st thing I thought of… I think he thinks I am an idiot. (that’s when I called Harry to come home and deal with the landlord... I think he hates me too)
But before Harry made it home….. I show the landlord the mold.
~Landlord says, “Yeah, open the window.” I look at him and try not to appear annoyed, “How do we get rid of it?” To which he replies, “No it’s okay!”
I am going to ask him for his email so I can send him the article I found about mold.
“Some molds also produce mycotoxins that can pose serious health risks to humans and animals. Exposure to high levels of mycotoxins can lead to neurological problems and in some cases death. Prolonged exposure, e.g. daily workplace exposure, can be particularly harmful.”
Oh, the winter days of Souda Bay.

My rebuttal
We started this blog, key words...WE in hopes of keeping you informed of our lives and ministry. So far, it has only been me.
But I have a few rebuttals.... and for those of you who know us... this is perfectly normal.
1st: Harry did not spend a fortune on Valentine's Day this year nor any other year ...than maybe our first year together.... and I am still waiting for a real Christmas present... and birthday too now that I think about it!
2nd: I went to the guys house to see if they had electricty....or if it was just out at our place! I know how to flip a breaker!
3rd: The possum was real! there was only way out of our place and it was up a flight of stairs. This bugger was like 2 feet tall and would not go back up the stairs. I stomped me feet at him... yelled... everything but run charging after him. Again it was a giant rat like creature! I am from the South... we have these 'round our parts, but dead beside the road.... not live and in your stairwell. I ran next door to see if the "guys" could... I don't know shoot it or run it over! Anything, I was late for work.... had a roll bag, back pack, carry-on and in 3 inch heels.
4th: I had to beat on the guys window...so I think the beating noise scared off the vermin... he was really there!
5th: We did not date a lot of people. Harry maybe, but not me!
6th: Harry just likes to "rescue" me!
Blessings to those in need of rescue,
Kristie
My only Valentine's card
Today is my mother's BIRTHDAY!! She is not 50 yet, but she is another year closer! We called her just as our day was ending and hers was beginning (the 8 hour time difference). Harry, Kayne and I will miss the cookout and birthday cake. But fortunate for us.... we can blame the late birthday card and gift on the mail service. "Momma is in the mail!"
Also I wanted to share my only Valentine's card this year. That's right... not one from my loving husband, but from my niece and nephew.
When I called Kadence to thank her for the pictures and card she replied, "I did not write it... my momma did, I just put the stickers on." I love how kids just say whatever is on their mind!

When Harry Met Kristie
Now you are probably wondering how it all started. Well it all began 11 years ago in Atlanta at the Comfort Suites and Inn. It was the first week of Feburary 1998 and I was begining my airline career. I clearly remember eating breakfeast and watching Kristie enter the room with amazement. Then my buddy Todd introduced us and she was gone with a flash. Little did I know what was ahead.
Then about two months later on the 8th of April our relationship began in earnst. I recall vividly trying to sleep after a long night of training when a knock came on the door. Then there was beating on my window. So I got up and there she is again. My friends had told me that several flight attendants were living next door but this was to good to be true! It was her. Even better because she needed my help. She informed me that the power was out in her kitchen (if you believe that). So I went to her rescue but what she did not know was that I was the worst guy to help her. I magically went to the electric box and reset the breaker and became a instant hero. Then the following night there was a mysterious animal on the stairs. I recieved a knock on the door and a pitful look. "Hary can please get rid of the possum so I can go to work?" Naturally there was nothing on the stairs but I was a hero again.
Over the next few months our friendship developed by the pool as we spent our days waiting on the call to work. We had a lot of fun and made many friends in our new town "Atlanta". We both dated a lot of people and were in and out of each others lives. Then finally in the spring of 2001 it occured to me that my life was meaningless and really that I couldn't live the same lifestyle forever. I was a new Captain and was living a life on the party scene but life was empty and shallow. That is really another story!
However, Kristie shows up at my place again (in need of rescue) and she had just broken up with her boyfriend. Things came to me in such clarity that it scared me. I realized Kristie was what I had been waiting for all a long. This realization happened over one afternoon. Frankly, I grabbed her and we had our first kiss. The rest is now history. We were married 7 months later on 20 October 2001! That is how Harry met Kristie.

Fire in the hole
Peabody ran for the door... she is so smart!
Eyes burning, nose sniffling.... I run downstairs... open all the doors... trying to unlatch all the windows.....realize that I might have just let the cat out.... so I run back to close all the doors... move all the items away from the front of the fireplace... drop them quickly as they scold my hand.
My eyes are watering... my nose dripping... and now I am freezing cold with all the windows open. Oh what an evening!
About 30 minutes later.... after the smoke had cleared.... somewhat
I only found one item lost in "The Great Smokeout of 2009" a once round candle.
And this is my first night home alone. In a freezing house, filled with smoke, smelling of smoke, and now with a excruciating headache from all the smoke.
Blessings to those with a fiery passion,
Kristie

Home alone...
Well, except for Oliver and Miss Peabody.
I am officially in hybernation status as of 6 am. I dropped the boys off at the airport for 7:20 departures.... and I departed for my house. I am debating whether to change out of pajamas for the next 3 days. I have a good book and several recommended movies and enough food in the fridge.
I kissed and hugged Harry and Kayne, respectively.... bid them safe travels... then drove at amazingly hurried speeds to get home, jump back into pj's , and gain full unbated access to the sofa and the REMOTE!!
Hah boys, for 3 whole days... I get to watch whatever I desire! As many chick flicks as I can find!
Blessings,
Kristie

How adorable
The kid's room
I wanted to keep you up to date with our progress....
The Chapel kids room has acquired a few new pieces of furniture. I say new.... they have been trickling in the past few months.
When we began almost a year ago this month. This is what we had.... our boy / girl box.
We shared the classrooms with the Navy education, security, and anyone else who needed the space. So we had this little box that contained all our possessions that we carried around wandering from place to place. Inevitably we lost items. But it was all we had.... and we loved it. It was ours and it was all we had.
Now, we have our very own room. We moved in around summer and claimed "squatter's rights". When we see things here on the island we buy them. When someone goes home on leave they bring us stuff back. I cram as much as TSA and Delta will allow me to legally fly with. Slowly and I repeat very slowly it's beginning to look like a real kids classroom. And we still keep our trusty little box. When I was thinking of designs for this room.... I centered them solely around our first container that held all our possessions. The boy / girl box.
Thanks to many of you... who have sent supplies...From scissors and glue....to construction paper and wiggly eyes. And even the larger items....."Container Store" containers to area rugs. Thank you so very much. I cannot wait until we actually have everything we need.
Blessings to those with a giving heart,
Kristie

My legs are in Turkey
Remember our kids room and all the supplies that are having to be shipped from the States. And remember the kids table that was sent without legs....
Well when I arrived this week I asked the question... "Where are my legs for the tables?"
Then yesterday, Penda, our RP called to tell me, "Mam, your legs are in Turkey."
And I am thinking great because Turkey is our next door neighbor, but no. My legs will leave Turkey to return to the States to be shipped out again hopefully... this time to Greece.
Where in the world will my legs turn up next?
Blessings to those with a good sense of direction,
Kristie

Another Christmas suprise
As I was wading through my recently delivered packages.... I stumbled upon our Christmas cards. I ordered these cards the first week of November. Only to have the company send a reply stating they could not deliver to the desired FPO address.
That's the last I heard... that is until today. Somehow the package found its way to our desired FPO address.
Opinions needed
Since August I have been trying to choose the design layout for this blog. I am sure Danielle is going mad with me for a client.
I have finally narrowed the thousands of choices down to 2.
Here they are:

OR....
Nameless

Remember... I do not do the whole scrapbooking thing... so I value your opinion. Once WE have made a decision and choose a design she can get started. I do not know how much longer I can stand all these hearts from the Valentine's layout.
So just leave a comment and vote on your favorite design for a layout.
Thanks,
Kristie

My Christmas gift....
Family and friends will often say, "Poor Harry." And yes sometimes it is poor Harry. As you can see in the posts I am a bit hard on him occasionally.... but only comically. Right?
So I just had to pass this tid bit of information along.
Once I returned home to Greece.....
The journey itself was quite cumbersome...31 hours and 2 tries to get into the same airport. We tried to land on Crete, but the winds were too high so we returned to Athens....only to fly back 2 hours later. (still with high winds) Then a 2 1/2 hour drive home that was lengthened to 3 1/2 because the farmers are striking and have the road blocked off. So we had to detour through the mountains. Needless to say I was tired. Bone aching, head throbbing tired.
I arrive home....get mauled by the animals....drop my bags....and want to just take a bath. But I will need to wait an hour for the hot water tank to heat up.
As Harry is lugging my remaining suitcases from the car....he says, "Do you see how clean everything is? Look how clean it is." I look around...to discover it actually is clean. "Check out the floors...and have you see your bathroom yet?"
And yes I did notice something awry or actually that nothing is awry...and now that I am looking over the house with an eagles eye....I see everything in it's place and shiny clean. The floors have a shine to them. The rugs have been vacuumed. The table is spotless. The Christmas tree is still up, but hey you cannot win them all.
"It's nice isn't it?" Harry asks as he continues showing me around the house. As we proceed up to the next floor....he points out, "and look in here" as he opens our laundry room. And that's when I know something is amiss. But I am not going to say anything negative because he and Kayne have obviously worked so very hard to make my homecoming a less stressful one.
When arriving my typical routine:
1. Love on animals
2. Take a bath
3. Unpack luggage
4. Start laundry
5. Begin a massive overhaul of our house.
6. Fuss at Harry about condition of house
7. Listen to Harry blame it on Kayne or Miss Peabody.
But this trip was different. I had an immaculately clean house. As Harry opens the bathroom door....he explains the tidiness, "It's your Christmas present."
"What? I ask.
"It's your Christmas present."
"My what?"
"We got you a maid for your Christmas," he exclaims with stars in his eyes.
"Okay?... for me uh? When did she start?"
"Just after you left," the stars no longer twinkling as brightly.
"Uh-huh, my Christmas present?"
"Yeah, she's Romanian." (Not sure what her nationality has to do with it?)
So I now have a maid....that is until Harry says now I am back we will only need her 1/2 the time.
So for all of our friends and family out there.... who think I give Harry a hard time. Please read this blog... and know that I bought Harry actual Christmas gifts...gifts that he will use and wear. He alone.
Again, do not think I am being harsh on Harry. Well maybe a little. A maid will help out tremendously on the areas I can do nothing with. These Greek marble floors are a bear. Especially during the winter rainy months. But .... I have the sneaking suspicion this gift was not for me.
Blessings to those with a clean heart,
Kristie

Packed and ready to go
As for the what I could not cram, stuff, mold, fold in half, air shrink into my bags.....
I had to box up to ship through the mail.
Hopefully, everything makes it. As for the mail....I should see it anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months. But what a treat when it actually arrives.
Blessings,
Kristie
